About Open Hearts

My favourite film of the last ten years at least! Joachim is paralyzed in a car accident. His fiancé Cecilie tries to support him, but can barely cope with his uncontrolled outbursts of bitterness. The woman who drove the car asks her husband Niels - a doctor at the hospital where Joachim is being treated - to help her. He does so and falls in love with her. When Cecilie begins an affair with him, he thinks that the feeling is mutual. Though he suffers from having to lie his wife, he also is happy. But Cecilie doesn't want to abandon Joachim. She isn't sure if she loves Niels or just needs comfort. She doesn't begin to think about it until Niels clearly tells her he wants a serious relationship. Open Hearts is a Dogme 95 film (original title "Elsker dig for evigt") and the concept increases the effect the story has over the audience. It's hard to describe for me what makes the film so special, so I'll just give you 3 reviews written by others:

Gunnar Rehlin, Variety: Poignant, thoughtful and utterly absorbing, Open Hearts is a gem.
Chris Roberts, uncut: Deeply moving and involving... beautifully observed, with acting so fine it hurts... tender, tough and true...
Alan Morrison, Empire: Exceptionally honest and strikingly unsentimental, this is a rare film that treats its audience and characters with respect.
